Background and overview
Japanese National Railways delivered air-conditioned 113-0 series in order
to replace 111 series used on Tokaido line long distance service and to
replace moha80 series and 153 series used on local services with surplus
111 series in Hiroshima area in October 1974. They were classified into
113-0´ series.
Car body
They have 2900mm wide body. Their body design incorporates lightweight
shaped steel and pressed forming beam to realize a light weight body. Their
skin and roof panel feature cold-rolled steel. The floor features lightweight
painted vehicle floorboards for fireproof. Their cab end is gangwayed,
having a gangway door and curved surface windscreens on the front. A destination
roll sign is fitted above the gangway door. Two headlights employing the
sealed beam light bulb are fitted each side of the gangway and two taillights
are fitted below the headlights. They are equipped with three 1300mm wide
double-leaf automatic sliding doors. 1075mm wide double-hung unit assembled
side windows, both the upper and lower sashes of which move up, and door
case windows are fitted between the doors, and 515mm and 1075mm wide double-hung
unit assembled windows and a smaller door case window are fitted at the
end of the body. Door operating equipments, TK4F are fitted above the door
header of the sliding doors. A destination rollsign is fitted on each side
of the body. Class moha112-0´ vehicles are equipped with 5 forced
draught ventilators on their roof and the others 6. They are also equipped
with an air conditioner, AU75B, rated at 42000kcal/h on the centre of the
roof. Their livery is green with orange wide band around side windows.
Bogies
Motored bogies are DT21B, and trailer bogies are TR62, employing swing hanger construction, coil springs as bolster spring, and pedestal type journal supporting system. The bogie located at the front of the end vehicle is equipped with a small wedge plough. The parallel cardan drive with hollow shaft is applied for the power transmission device. The gear ratio is 4.82. Motored bogies employ the double tread brake rigging and trailer bogies employ the disk brake rigging.
Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Eight series-wound brushed DC traction motors, MT54D, featuring international
standard are controlled by the armature-resistance traction control system,
CS12G, fitted to powered intermediate vehicles, class moha113-0. Class
moha112-0´ vehicles are equipped with a motor generator, MH97-DM61,
with a power output of 20kVA. Class moha112-0´ vehicles are also
equipped with a current pickup, PS16, on their roof. Powered intermediate
vehicles, class moha112-0´, and trailer end vehicles, class kuha111-300´,
are equipped with a motor driven air compressor, MH80A-C1000, under their
floor. They adopt electromagnetic straight air brake with the rheostatic
brake.
Accommodation
They have mixture of longitudinal bench seating and transverse seating bays with 1420mm seating pitch. Longitudinal bench seating is located at beside doors. The cab section of the driver's seat is extended compared to no air-conditioned 113-0 series. Class kuha111 vehicles are equipped with a Japanese style toilet floored with s stainless steel for anti-corrosion and having a chemical holding tank, located at the rear of the body.
Additional delivery
The cover fitted below seats and frames of the overhead luggage reck of the vehicles built from 1977 were changed into stainless steel to eliminate painting.

Class saro110-300
Background and overview
JNR had been building class saro110-1200 vehicles in order to displace class saro112 vehicles until 1981. However, JNR converted surplus 1st class vehicles of 181 series intercity DC electric multiple unit due to the opening of newly constructed Joetsu Shinkansen to 1st class vehicles of 113 series in order to replace superannuated class saro110-0 saro111-0 vehicles over the period from March 1983 until April. A vehicle converted from class saro180-1000 and two vehicles converted from class saro181-1050 were classified into saro110-300. Furthermore, some 183-0 series train set used on intercity services in Boso area (Chiba pref.) were changed 6-car sets consisting of only standard class vehicles to result in that 8 class saro183-0 vehicles were left over. So, JNR converted these surplus saro183-0 vehicles to 1st class vehicles of 113 series over the period from January 1987 until January of the following year and classified them into saro110-300.
Car body
Saro110-301 is converted from class saro180-1000. The additional body end section having a 700mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding door and a door case window on each side is fitted where the section of a toilet and a washroom located toward the front of class saro180-1000, and an additional side window is also fitted. The third windows from each end employ the hopper window for ventilation in emergency. The door operation equipment for additional doors is TK103. On the other hand, that for existing doors is TK100B. It employs 6 air conditioners, AU12, rated at 4000kcal/h fitted on the roof.
Saro110-302 and -303 are converted from class saro181-1050. The additional body end section having a 700mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding door and a door case window on each side is fitted where the section of a western style toilet and a washroom located toward the front of class saro181-1050. The third windows from each end employ the hopper window for ventilation in emergency. The door operation equipment for additional doors is TK103. On the other hand, that for existing doors is TK100B. The existing door had a step, but the step was removed and an additional lower track for the door is fitted. They employ 6 air conditioners, AU12, rated at 4000kcal/h fitted on the roof. Existing roll signs are changed into those for 113 series.
Saro110-304 to -311 are converted from class saro183-0. The additional body end section having a 700mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding door and a door case window on each side is fitted where the section of a Japanese style toilet and a washroom located toward the rear of class saro183-0. They employ 5 air conditioners, AU13E, rated at 5500 kcal/h and 6 forced draught ventilators.
Bogies
Bogies for saro110-301 are TR69C featuring the bellows air spring, a lower bolster, pedestal type journal supporting system and the large diameter centre pivot, for saro110-302 onwards are TR69H featuring the diaphragm air spring, pedestal type journal supporting system and the large diameter centre pivot. Their bogies also employ the disk brake rigging.
Accommodation
Saro110-301 has 2-2 abreast reclining seating, R24, with 1160mm seating pitch. They are equipped with a conductor room and a service room converted from a luggage room located toward rear of the passenger saloon.
Saro110-302 and -303 have 2-2 abreast reclining seating, R24, with 1160mm seating pitch. They are equipped with a conductor room and a service room located toward front of the passenger saloon, a Japanese style toilet a washroom located across the aisle from the toilet located at the front of the body.
Saro110-304 onward are equipped with a conductor room and a service room located toward front of the passenger saloon. The catering room located at the front of the vehicle is in mothball.
Class saro110-350
Background and overview
Following class saro110-300, JNR converted 12 surplus 1st class vehicles of 498 series intercity AC/DC dual-voltage electric multiple unit to 1st class vehicles of 113 series over the period from August 1983 until March of the following year and classified them into class saro110-350.
Car body
They have 2946mm wide body. Their body design incorporates lightweight shaped steel and pressed forming beam to realize a lightweight body. Their skin features cold-rolled steel and roof panel features hot-rolled steel. The additional body end section having a 700mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding door and a door case window on each side is fitted where the section of a western style toilet and a washroom located toward the front of class saro489-0. The third windows from each end employ the hopper window for ventilation in emergency. The door operation equipment for additional doors is TK103. On the other hand, that for existing doors is TK100B. The existing door had a step, but the step was removed and an additional lower track the door is fitted. Existing roll signs are changed into those for 113 series. Saro110-351 to -356, -359, -360 employ 6 air conditioners, AU12, rated at 4000kcal/h fitted on the roof, and the others 5 air conditioners, AU13E, rated at 5500kcal/h.
Bogies
Bogies are TR69A or TR69E featuring pedestal type journal supporting system and the large diameter centre pivot. TR69A also features the bellows air spring and TR69E the diaphragm air spring. Their bogies also employ the disk brake rigging.
Accommodation
They have 2-2 abreast reclining seating, R24, with 1160mm seating pitch. They are equipped with a conductor room and a service room located toward front of the passenger saloon, a Japanese style toilet a washroom located across the aisle from the toilet located at the front of the body.
Class saro110-400
Background and overview
JNR converted surplus 1st class vehicles of 165 series express DC electric multiple unit due replaced with 185 series EMU to 1st class vehicles of 113 series for the additional capacity of Yokosuka and Sobu rapid lines in March 1985 and classified them into class saro110-400.
Car body
They have 2900mm wide body. Their body design incorporates lightweight shaped steel and pressed forming beam to realize a lightweight body. Their skin and roof panel feature cold-rolled steel. They are equipped with two 700mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding doors at the end of the body, and six pairs of 925mm wide drop windows between the doors. Door operating equipments, TK4H, are fitted above the door header of the sliding doors. A destination rollsign is additionally fitted. They employ 5 air conditioners, AU13E, rated at 5500 kcal/h and 6 forced draught ventilators. Their livery is green with orange wide band around side windows.
Bogies
Bogies are TR69B featuring pedestal type journal supporting system, the bellows air spring, the large diameter centre pivot, and the improved bolster anchor. Their bogies also employ the disk brake rigging.
Ancillary equipments
A motor generator, MH128-DM85, class saro165 vehicles were equipped is removed.
Accommodation
They have 2-2 abreast reclining seating, R21T, with 1160mm seating pitch. They are equipped with a conductor room located toward front of the passenger saloon, a Japanese style toilet at the front of the vehicle, and a washroom located across the aisle from the toilet. It also has a shunting control position.
Class saro110-500
Background and overview
JNR had been building class saro110-1200 vehicles to displace class saro112 vehicles until 1981. However, JNR converted surplus standard class vehicles of 165 series express DC electric multiple unit to 1st class vehicles of 113 series in 1983 and classified it into saro110-500.
Car body
It has 2900mm wide body. Their body design incorporates lightweight shaped steel and pressed forming beam to realize a lightweight body. Its skin and roof panel feature cold-rolled steel. It is equipped with two 1000mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding doors at the end of the body, and 1080mm wide double-hung unit assembled windows, the upper sash of which moves down and the lower moves up, between the doors. Door operating equipments, TK4H, are fitted above the door header of the sliding doors. A destination rollsign is additionally fitted. It employs 5 air conditioners, AU13E, rated at 5500 kcal/h and 6 forced draught ventilators. Its livery is green with orange wide band around side windows.
Bogies
Bogies are TR69B featuring pedestal type journal supporting system, the bellows air spring, the large diameter centre pivot, and the improved bolster anchor. Their bogies also employ the disk brake rigging.
Ancillary equipments
A motor generator, MH122A-DM76A, class saho165 vehicles were equipped is removed.

It has 2-2 abreast reclining seating, R51BN, with 1010mm seating pitch. It is equipped with a Japanese style toilet at the rear of the vehicle, and a washroom located across the aisle from the toilet. It is equipped with no conductor room.
Class saha111-400
Moha113-273 and moha112-273 were converted to the trailer intermediate
vehicles of 113-0 series in October 1986 and were classified into saha111-400.
Their bogies were changed into TR62. A traction system and a traction resistor
of moha113-273 were removed to convert it to saha111-401. On the other
hand, a motor generator, an air compressor, and a current pickup were removed
to convert it to saha111-402. Subsequently, moha113-1058 and moha112-1058
received same conversion in March 1988.
JR East
Modification of accommodation to longitudinal bench seating
The accommodation of standard class vehicles of 11-car sets used on Tokaido
line long distance services was changed into longitudinal bench seating
to relieve overcrowding over the period from 1989 until 1992.
Refurbishment Programme
The refurbishment programme was commenced for some vehicle received from JNR in order to extend their life over the period from 1988 until 1993. This programme includes introducing polyurethane resin-based roofing material, the replacement of body skin, introducing continuous welds to join the underframe and the body skin, removing all exterior painting for repainting, changing the floor material into the metal, and the replacement the sliding doors with ones made by stainless steel. In addition, this programme includes the entire replacement of interior decorative panels, seat fabric replacement, and the luggage racks replacement with new ones made by aluminum alloy and stainless steel.
Modification for reliability improvement
JR East modified 113-0´ series vehicles allocated at Makuhari depot
in order to improve the reliability with the replacement of an existing
reciprocation air compressor with a scroll compressor, MH3114-C1500EB.
The bearing of the bogies was changed into sealed roller bearing and classified
them into TR62D.
JR West
Refurbishment programme N
In addition to special maintenance work focused on retaining the function
the vehicles, refurbishment programme N to improve outdated accommodation
was applied for 23 113-0´ series vehicles over the period from September
1987 until May of the following year. Some accommodation improvements were
included for these works. The fabric of seating was changed into red. Some
parts of the luggage rack were replaced with those made by stainless steel,
and the others were plated in silver coloured. The decorative end panels
were replaced with brown coloured and the decorative wainscot panels were
replaced with peptone brown-coloured plates. Additional fluorescent lights
were fitted to improve the illuminance in the passenger room.
Work for speed improvement
-5000 subseries
JR West modified 113-0´ series used on JR Kobe, JR Kyoto, Biwako
and Hanwa line rapid services with some improvements over the period from
January 1992 until March of the following year, including load-responding
brake, improved brake lining and shoe, improved primary spring for the
hunting prevention, and changing brake lever ratio in order to introduce
110km/h operation, and classified them into -5000 subseries.
-6000 subseries
JR modified 6-car sets of 113-0´ series allocated at Miyahara depot,
consisting of 4 powered vehicles and 2 trailer vehicles, with some improvements
over the period from August 1992 until November, including load-responding
brake, improved brake shoe and lining, improved primary spring for the
hunting prevention, and brake lever ratio changed from 2.56 to 4.19 of
powered vehicles in order to introduce 110km/h operation, and classified
them into -6000 subseries.
Class kumoha113/112-300
Background and overview
JR West modified class moha113-0´ and moha112-0´ powered intermediate
vehicles into powered end vehicles, class kumoha113-300 and kumoha112-300
to make 2-car sets for the start of electrified Sanin line between Sonobe
and Fukuchiyama over the period from February 1995 until July. Nine 2-car
sets were delivered to Fukuchiyama depot.
Car body
A cab section of scrapped kuha111 is transplanted on to the front of moha113-0´
and at the rear of moha112-0´. A double leaf sliding door next to
the cab is moved 640mm toward the cab considering conductor-less operation.
They are also equipped with the buttons beside the door to open or close
the door manually by pushing them to prevent the passenger's room from
being cold in winter. Displays showing entrance or exit are fitted on the
door case beside the doorways at the both ends for conductor-less operation.
The pneumatic horns located beside headlights are additionally equipped
with the rotary shutter for the protection against snow. They are also
equipped with the automatic jumper coupler to ease rush-up operations.
Their livery is green with orange wide band around side windows and a cream-coloured
boundary between green part and orange part for the identification of conductor-less
train.
Accommodation
They have mixture of longitudinal bench seating and transverse seating bays with 1420mm seating pitch. Class kumoha112-2000 vehicles are equipped with a Japanese style toilet with a chemical disposable tank located at the rear of the body. The ticket machine, which put the ticket indicating the boarding station, is located beside doorways at the end of their body. The fare chart seven segment display and the fare box are located behind the driver's cab.
Modification
They received the work for speed improvement and were classified into -5300 series in 1996. Refurbishment programme N40 excepting accommodation refurbishment was also commenced on kumoha113/112-5302 and kumoha113/112-5309.
Refurbishment programme N40
JR West commenced refurbishment programme on 16 113-0´ series vehicles
to bring the accommodation and ancillary equipments at the similar level
to the contemporary rolling stocks over the period from April 1999 until
June 2001.
Car body
Corroded body skin was refurbished and the rain gutter was integrated with the body skin. Ventilators on the roof were removed. Door operating equipments were changed into the direct driven type, WTK113, and the buttons beside the door were additionally fitted to open or close the door manually by pushing them. For draft prevention, side windows located between sliding doors were changed into the aluminum made double sash unit assembled window, the upper sash of which moves down and lower fixed, and windows located at the end of the body were changed into the fixed window. The method to equip door case windows and the windscreen with the window pane was changed into gluing.
Accommodation
Prefabricated panels were employed for the ceiling construction to flat the ceiling and the fluorescent lights fitted on the ceiling were covered. Straps were fitted throughout their body. Seating accommodation was changed into 2+2 abreast switchable transverse seating with 910mm seating pitch excepting the end of the end vehicles. The overhead luggage racks were changed into constructed with pipes having the decorative cover at the edge. The covers fitted on the floor for the inspection of the traction motor were filled with the plates. Doors located at the both end of the vehicle were changed into self-closing.
Operations
Tokyo metropolitan area
113-0´ series entered revenue services on Tokaido line in 1975. However,
they were gradually replaced with E231 series and some trailer end vehicles
were transferred to Makuhari depot in order to replace superannuated end
vehicles of 113-0 series. The others had been replaced and completely scrapped
until 2006.
Kansai area
113-0´ series delivered to Takatsuki depot and entered Tokaido Sanyo
lines rapid services in 1977. However, some vehicles replaced with 223-2000
series were transferred to replace superannuated 113-0´ series vehicles
used on Hanwa line rapid services, and the others were transferred to Shimonoseki
and Hiroshima depots. Vehicles used in Hiroshima area were displaced with
227-0 series and scrapped. Only end vehicles of 113-0´ series are
now used on local services in Okayama area. |
