Background and overview
Japanese National Railways allocated required 113 series vehicles for the start of electrified Fukuchiyama line between Takarazuka and Fukuchiyama and electrified Sanin line between Fukuchiyama and Kinosaki in November 1986 whereby the introduction of the protection against snow and coldness into surplus 113 vehicles displaced with additionally delivered 117-100 and 205-0 series. They were classified into -800 subseries. 9 four-car sets consisting of 2 powered vehicles and 14 two-car sets consisting of 2 powered vehicles were delivered.

Car body
The door operating equipment is TK4F employing an additional solenoid valve, and the modified control circuit, and door handles to allow hand operation to prevent the passenger's room from being cold in winter. Some vehicles are air-conditioned, and the others are not. Some vehicles were additionally equipped with an air conditioner when they were modified into -800 series. Most of them are equipped with globe ventilators but the rest forced draught ventilators. The pneumatic horns located beside headlights are additionally equipped with the rotary shutter for the protection against snow. Powered end vehicles required for 2-car sets were reformed from powered intermediate vehicles by fitting an additional cab section. An additional cab section is fitted at the front of moha113-0 vehicles and classified into class kumoha113-800 and at the rear of the moha112-0 vehicles and into class kumoha112-800. Furthermore, kumoha112 vehicles are additionally equipped with a Japanese style toilet and a water tank for a toilet. Their livery was yellow with a horizontal blue band below the windows.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Eight series-wound brushed DC traction motors, MT54 or MT54B, with a power output of 120kW are controlled by the armature-resistance traction control system, CS12D, CS12E, or CS12F, fitted to powered intermediate vehicles, class moha113-800 and powered end vehicles, class kumoha113-800. Class moha112-800 vehicles without air-conditioning are equipped with a motor generator, MH97-DM61, with a power output of 20kVA and vehicles with air-conditioning MH135-DM92 with a power output of 160kVA under their floor. On the other hand, kumoha112-800 vehicles modified from moha112-0 with air-conditioning are equipped with a motor generator, MH135-DM92, with a power output of 160kVA, air-conditioned kumoha112-800 vehicles modified from moha112-0 without air-conditioning are equipped with MH94-DM58, transplanted from scrapped class sashi481/489 with 70kVA, and kumoha112-800 vehicles without air-conditioning are equipped with MH97-DM61 with a power output of 20 kVA under their floor. Class moha112-800 and kumoha112-800 vehicles are also equipped with a current pickup, PS16, on their roof. Powered intermediate vehicles, class moha112-800, and even numbered trailer end vehicles, class kuha111-800, are equipped with a motor driven air compressor, MH80A-C1000, under their floor. They adopt electromagnetic straight air brake with the rheostatic brake.

Additional delivery
JR West reformed 2-car sets and 4-car sets of 113-800 series into 3-car sets for 415-800 series and 3-car sets for 113-800 series in order to make 3-car set of dual voltage AC/DC 415-800 series trains. 3-car sets for 415-800 series consist of a powered end vehicle from 2-car sets, a powered intermediate vehicle from 4-car sets, and a trailer end vehicle from 4-car sets. On the other hand, 3-car sets for 113-800 series consist of a trailer end vehicle from 4-car sets, a powered intermediate vehicle from 4-car sets, and a powered end vehicle from 2-car sets. Some powered intermediate vehicles and trailer end vehicles were carried from 113-0 series. For this reason, 10 moha113-0 vehicles and 7 kuha111-0 carried from 113-0 series were additionally modified into 113-800 series over the period from October 1990 until August of the following year.
Furthermore, 3 surplus kuha111-300 vehicles were modified into kuha111-800 in order to make 2-car sets 3-car sets for additional transportation capacity.

Modification and refurbishment
Modification to be fitted with the air conditioners
After the splitting of former JNR into the new privatized JR companies in 1987, JR West received a lot of unairconditioned vehicles of 113-800 series. For this reason, JR West additionally equipped four 4-car sets with three new developed air conditioners, WAU102, rated at 12000kcal/h on the roof over the period from August 1988 until August 1991. Electric fans still were remained under the ceiling. Electricity to power air conditioners were supplied from an auxiliary power supply, WAC23, with a power output of 130kVA, which odd numbered kuha111-8000 vehicles were equipped with.
On the other hand, JR West equipped unairconditioned 2-car sets with WAU202 rated at 30000kcal/h having 4 indoor units at the corner of the ceiling, and an outdoor unit in the facility room located at the rear. The outdoor unit was migrated on the roof years later.

Refurbishment programme N/refurbishment programme NA
In addition to special maintenance work focused on retaining the function the vehicles, refurbishment programme N to improve outdated accommodation was applied for 34 113-800 series vehicles over the period from September 1987 until May of the following year, or refurbishment programme NA to improve accommodation of vehicles applied special maintenance work was applied for 18 113-800 series vehicles over the period from September 1987 until May of the following year. Some accommodation improvements were included for these works. The fabric of seating was changed into red. Some parts of the luggage rack were replaced with those made by stainless steel, and the others were plated in silver coloured. The decorative end panels were replaced with brown coloured and the decorative wainscot panels were replaced with peptone brown-coloured plates. Additional fluorescent lights were fitted to improve the illuminance in the passenger room.

Class kuha111-800
JR West modified a kuha111-800 B end vehicle with removal of an air compressor and relocation of jumper couplers to compensate the lack of an A end trailer vehicle of 113-800 series in 1991 caused by the convert of 113-800 series to 415-800 series for the start of electrified Nanao line. At this time, JR West fitted kuha111-802 vehicle with air conditioners, WAU102, rated at 12000kcal/h on the roof and an auxiliary power supply unit, WSC23 under the floor.

-5800 subseries
JR West modified 6 113-800 series vehicles used on JR Kobe, JR Kyoto, Biwako and Hanwa line rapid services with some improvements from 1992, including load-responding brake, improved brake lining and shoe, improved primary spring for the hunting prevention, and changing brake lever ratio in order to introduce 110km/h operation, and classified them into -5000 subseries.

Class kumoha113-3800
JR West shorten 3-car sets used on Fukuchiyama and Sanin lines rural services to make 2-car sets for the optimization of transportation capacity by constructing the cab having no gangway at the front of powered intermediate vehicle, moha113-800, and classified them into class kumoha113-3800 in 2000. Equipments fitted in the cab were transplanted from scrapped kuha111. The fare box used for conductor-less operation is located behind the driver's cab.

Class kumoha113-3800
JR West equipped kumoha112 vehicles with the fare box in order to introduce the conductor-less operation at the shortening 3-car sets used on Fukuchiyama and Sanin lines rural services into 2-car sets and classified them into class kumoha112-3800 in 2000. However, kumoha112-3802 and kumoha112-3811 are equipped with a motor generator, MH135-DM92, with a power output of 160kVA. On the other hand, kumoha112-3805, -3806, -3810, -3812 through -3814 are equipped with a motor generator, MH94-DM58, with a power output of 70kVA. Kumoha112-3804 is equipped with an auxiliary power supply, WSC23, with a power output of 130kVA, in order to displace MH97-DM61 with a power output of 20kVA
Equipments fitted in the cab were transplanted from scrapped kuha111. The fare box used for conductor-less operation is located behind the driver's cab. Kumoha112-3802, -3805, -3811, and -3814 vehicles are also equipped with a second de-icing current pickup.

Operations
113-800 series vehicles were delivered to Fukuchiyama depot and entered revenue services on Fukuchiyama and Sanin lines between Osaka and Kinosaki in November 1986. A 4-car set was relocated to Mukomachi depot and entered Kusatsu line rural services in 1994. In addition, another 4-car set was relocated to Mukomachi depot and modified into -5800 subseries to be used on Kosei and Kusatsu lines in 1997. Furthermore, a 4-car set of 113-800 series allocated at Mukomachi depot was reallocated to Shimonoseki depot in 1999.
On the other hand, 113-800 series used on Fukuchiyama line rural services had been displaced with 223-6000 series and 223-5500 series until 2008. A last remaining kuha111-800 vehicle allocated at Shimonoseki depot was withdrawn and all of 113-800 series were completely scrapped in 2016.
