In 2010, JR East developed E233-5000 series electric multiple unit (EMU) trains in order to replace superannuated 201 series EMU and 205 series EMU used on the Keiyo line commuter services.
There are 10-car and 4+6-car sets. Their formations consist of 6 motored vehicles and 4 trailer vehicles, based on E233-0 series EMU used on the Chuo lines commuter services. Intermediate cars, Moha E233-5000 and Moha E233-5600, are equipped with a backup current collector. Motored cars, which consist of 6 or 10 car set, are connected with high voltage bus cable.
Traction systems consist of the 2-level AVAF inverter featuring Intelligent Power Module (IPM). E233-5000 series feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake. The Soga side end car of 6-car formation and the Tokyo end car of 4-car formation are equipped with the automatic jumper coupler.
Passenger accommodation is cantilever type longitudinal bench seating. 17" wide liquid-crystal display screens are used for providing passenger information delivered by WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) high speed wireless communication.
E233-6000 series are used on the commuter and rapid services of the Keiyo line, Uchibo line, Sotobo line, and Tohgane Line.
