Background and overview
813-0 series are the 2nd generation of suburban AC electric multiple unit (EMU) of JR Kyushu. They were delivered in 1994. Their formation consists of 1 motored vehicle and 1 trailer vehicle in order to make the formations of suburban trains more flexible.

Car body
They have 2950mm wide body, incorporating unpainted light weight stainless construction. Pier panels also feature bead processed stainless sheet to emphasize the mechanical design. The cab section constructed by steel and doors are painted in red colour. A gangway door is fitted on the front of the end cars. Cab ends are covered with tempered glass. They are equipped with three 1300mm wide double-leaf automatic sliding doors on each side of the vehicles and drop or fix windows between the doors. Traditional roller-binding destination screens are fitted on each side of the body. An air conditioner, AU403 rated at 42,000kcal/h, is fitted on the centre of their roof. No ventilators are fitted on the roof. End cars are equipped with the automatic jumper coupler and the semi-automatic gangway connection device to ease rush-up operations.

Bogies
Their bogies are DT401K/TR401K featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension, corn-shaped multilayered rubber spring journal supporting system, and double collar sealed roller bearing for improved stability at high speed. Traction device of the bogie is Z link type. The wheel diameter is reduced to 810mm to make their floor level lower. These bogies adopt the yaw dampers to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 120km/h.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Variable-frequency drive (VFD) traction system, PC400K, features Gate Turn Off (GTO) thyristor. Traction motors, MT401K, with a power output of 150 kW are controlled on axle basis. The gear ratio is 5.56. Their traction system features the primary current suppression control. The trailer end vehicles, Kuha813, are equipped with a traction rectifier, RS405K, a traction transformer, TM404K, and a motor driven air compressor, MH410K-C1000ML, under the floor. Class Kuha813 vehicles are also equipped with a cross-arm type current collector, PS400K. The brake system is the electric command pneumatic brake. 813 series don't adopt regenerative brake like 783 series but rheostatic brake.

Accommodation
Seating accommodation consists of switchable transverse seating with 910mm seating pitch and transverse bucket seating bays at the ends of cars. The air conditioning duct is fitted above the ceiling in order to improve interior design and the outlets of cool air are slit shape. Class Kuha813 vehicles are equipped with a Japanese style toilet having chemical holding tank.

Modification and History of Operations
813-0 series entered the revenue services of the Nippo line ordinary services, replacing superannuated 421 series allocated at Ohita depot, 1994. Class Saha813-400 vehicles were delivered to standardize the entire fleet as three-car sets in 2003. Saha813-400 vehicles are same as class Saha813-300 vehicles, featuring heat ray absorption glasses to omit roller blinds.

Latest operation status
813-0 series are now used on the rapid services and ordinary services of Kagoshima, Nippo, and Nagasaki lines.
