Background and overview
In 2007, JR Kyushu delivered 813-1100 series EMU introduced some changes. Their formation consists of 1 motored intermediate vehicle and 2 trailer end vehicles.

Car body
LED destination indicators fitted on the front and side of their body were enlarged in order to improve visibility. This change caused alternation of cab end profile and made the height of side windows below the destination indicator lower. Loudspeakers, providing guidance broadcast for passengers waiting at a station, are fitted on each side of the body. They feature elastic floor material for soundproofing and discontinuing blinds by adopting heat ray absorption glasses.

Bogies
Bogies were changed into DT403K/TR403K employing the single link traction device and conical roller bearing.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Class moha813-1100 vehicles are equipped with two traction systems, PC402K, consisting of a 3-level converter employing Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) and a 2-level Variable-frequency drive (VFD) employing IGBT which control 2 AC asynchronous traction motors, MT402KA, with a power output of 190kW on truck basis. Because of his, their traction transformer was changed into TM409K having two secondary windings. Class moha813 vehicles are also equipped with a single arm current pickup, PS401KA, on their roof. Class kuha813-1100 vehicles are equipped with a motor driven air compressor, MH410K-C1000ML, under their floor. Class kuha812-1100 vehicles are equipped with an auxiliary power unit, SC402KA, with a power output of 15kVA.

Accommodation
Seating accommodation consists of switchable transverse seating with 910mm seating pitch and transverse bucket seating bays at the ends of cars, employing cantilever construction to improve the cleanability. Class kuha813-1100 vehicles are equipped with a universal access toilet and a wheelchair space. As for the device of driving cab, one handle master controller operated by the left hand was adopted same as 817 series.

Modification
From 2021, transverse seating immediately between the doors of 813-1100 series began to be removed in order to increase the capacity of the cars. All 813-1100 series vehicles were modified and classified into -3100 subseries. This helped to reduce the problem of rush hour trains being delayed due to the time needed for passengers to board and alight.

Latest operation status
813-3100 series are now used on the rapid services and ordinary services of Kagoshima, Nippo, Nagasaki, Chikuhou, and Sasaguri lines.
