Background and overview
JR Kyushu developed class kiha47 deluxe excursion diesel multiple unit (DMU) train provisionally called "Kawasemi Yamasemi" named for the Kingfisher and Crested Kingfisher. "Kawasemi Yamasemi" intercity service is operated by a 2-car set consisting of kiha47 8087 named "Kawasemi" and kiha47 9051 named "Yamasemi".

Car body
The front doorway of kiha47 8087 and rear doorway of kiha47 9051 were filled with the plates by welding. Windows not facing seating were also filled with plates. Remaining windows were changed into fixed windows. Additional headlights were fitted toward the centre beside existing taillights. The body of kiha47 8087 is painted in blue and its headboard with a kingfisher motif is fitted on the gangway door at the front. The body of kiha47 9051 is painted in green and its headboard with a crested kingfisher. Each vehicle has a décor having silhouettes of regional birds above the rollsign at the front. Large "Kawasemi" or "Yamasemi" logos are also applied to the body side backward. They employ a prime mover driven air conditioner, AU619K, rated at 20,600kcal/h and a self-powered air conditioner, AU620K, rated at 20,000kcal/h. Two indoor units are fitted on their roof and two outdoor units are fitted under their floor. Ventilators are removed.

Bogies
They are equipped with a powered bogie, DT22D, and a trailer bogie, TR51C, carried from kiha47 87/1051 vehicles, featuring pedestal guide type journal supporting system, coil springs secondary suspension, and 1-axle drive.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Kiha47 8087 vehicle is equipped with a prime mover, SA6D125H-1A, of Komatsu Limited with a power output of 300PS and a hydraulic transmission gear, TACN-22-1612A, of Niigata Converter Co. On the other hand, kiha47 9051 is equipped with a prime mover, SA6D125HE-1, of Komatsu Limited with a power output of 300PS featuring the common rail direct fuel injection for anti-air pollution, and a hydraulic transmission gear, TACN-22-1612A, of Niigata Converter Co. Their brake system is the automatic electromagnetic (CLE) pneumatic brake with compression release engine brake.

Accommodation
The region's materials such as Japanese cypress woods used on benches, counter tables and show cases, cedar woods, and Juncus effusus used on rope curtain have been favored in the design and regional products are honored inside the train. Wooden roller blinds are fitted on the windows. Bracket lights covered with the wooden muntin are fitted between windows. Window frames are made by wood and fire-resistant wooden floor is featured.

Kiha47 8087
Passenger accommodation consists of 24 reclining seats with 2+2 abreast located toward front, 10 wooden chairs and 3 wooden chairs for children facing the windows and having wooden counter tables located at the middle, a 4-passenger transverse seating bay with a wooden table and a 2-passenger transverse seating located beside the doorway. The baggage shelfs are fitted behind the cab and a universal access toilet is located at the end of the car.

Kiha47 9051
Passenger accommodation consists of two 2-passenger sofas and a baggage shelf located behind the cab, 16 reclining seats with 2+2 abreast located toward front, 4 wooden chairs and two 2-passenger wooden benches facing the windows and having a wooden counter table located at the middle, a 4-passenger transverse seating bay and two 2-passenger transverse seating bays with a wooden table located toward rear. A buffet counter is fitted at the end of the vehicle.

Operations
They entered "Kawasemi Yamasemi" intercity services linking Kumamoto and Hitoyoshi running along Hisatsu and Kagoshima lines. Since 4 July 2020, no trains have operated on the 86.8 km section of the line between Yatsushiro and Yoshimatsu, due to catastrophic damage caused by the 2020 Kyushu floods, therefore, they now run between Hakata and Moji-ko as "Kawasami Yamasemi Isaburou Shimpei" intercity services temporally.
