EF81 303

Background and overview
Japan National Railways (JNR) delivered class EF81-300 multi-voltage AC/DC electric locomotive for the additional capacity of Kanmon Tunnel between Shimonoseki and Moji of Sayno line in 1973. There are some noticeable differences over standard class EF81-0. EF81-300 locos for use on services through the undersea Kanmon Tunnel having high humidity environment because of dropping sea water employ the unpainted corrugated stainless-steel body for the protection against corrosion.

Traction unit and auxiliary equipments
Traction motors, MT52A, are controlled by a traction system, CS36C, featuring camshaft contactor vernier control for acceleration and deceleration, and a camshaft contactor field control system, CS37C, for anti-slip control and axle load compensating. Their traction rectifier is RS36B discontinuing inverter function for train-heating. No train heating indicator lights are fitted.

Operations
EF81 301 and EF81 302 were relocated to Uchigo depot to replace superannuated EF80 multi-voltage AC/DC electric locomotive used on passenger and freight services through Johban line. They were painted in rose pink. In 1986, they were relocated to Moji depot again. At this time all EF81 300 locos were added multiple unit control to be used in pairs hauling through the Kanmon Tunnel.
After the splitting of JNR into the new privatized JR companies, EF81 301, 302, and 304 locos were withdrawn because of introducing new multi-voltage AC/DC electric locomotive, EH500, by JR Freight. A remaining EF81 303 is now used on the freight services of Sanyo, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, and Nippo lines.
