Background and overview
In 1991, JR Freight built EF81-450 locomotives for the additional capacity
of Kanmon Tunnel between Shimonoseki and Moji of Sayno line. There are
some noticeable differences over former built EF81-500 locos.
EF81-450 adopts multiple unit control to be used in pairs hauling through
the Kanmon Tunnel. Their body skin was changed into weatherproof steel
sheet for the corrosion resistance. Headlights are moved to lower part
of the body end, employing modern-style headlight clusters. The body of
EF81 453 onward built in 1992 returned to the classic design.
Their livery adopts a two-tone blue and white livery with a dark blue colour hemline band. Traction motors were changed into MT52C, featuring the roller bearing for the rotor shaft. A pair of cross-arm type current collectors, PS22E employing the solenoid operated valve for rising and falling, are fitted on the roof.
Latest operation status
EF81-450 locomotives are now used on the freight services through Sanyo line between Hatabu and Moji, Kagoshima line, Nagasaki line, and Nippo line. |
