Background and overview
JR Freight delivered class EF81 multi-voltage AC/DC electric locomotives
for providing additional capacity of freight services along the Sea of
Japan coastal route in 1989. They were designed based on the final batch
of EF81-0, employing some improvement, and classified into -500 subclass.
The train heating equipment is discontinued not to haul the passenger train.
Co-driver's seats are also discontinued because of fitting an air conditioner
in the driver's cabs. The relay control system is introduced excepting
the circuit of the cut-off current control, the current detector, the speed
detector, and wheel slipping detector. The camshaft contactor vernier controller
is changed into FCS36C, the camshaft contactor field controller is into
FCS27C, the transformer is into FTM17A, and the rectifier is into FRS36D.
Their livery adopts a two-tone blue and white livery with rose pink-coloured
doors. The position of locomotive number in front of the body is moved
to right side.
Operations
EF81-500 locomotives were delivered to Toyama depot and used on the freight services of along the Sea of Japan coastal route. Since they were replaced with EF510 locomotives, they began to be relocated to Moji depot in 2013. EF81-500 locomotives are now used on the freight services in Kyushu region. |
