Background and overview
JR East developed 205-500 series electric multiple unit (EMU) trains into services for its newly electrified Sagami line in 1991. 205-500 series consist of 2 motored vehicles and 2 trailer vehicles.

Car body
The vehicle design incorporates light stainless steel construction. All vehicles are equipped with 4 pairs of doors on each side of the vehicles. Their cab design differs from that of former 205-0 series. They are finished in a livery with a blue green and light blue body side stripe. They are equipped with four 1300mm wide double-leaf automatic sliding doors on each side of the vehicles. Door operating equipments, TK111, are fitted above the upper groove of the sliding doors which can be operated manually by pushing the button fitted beside the door.

Ancillary equipments
The current collector was changed into the single-arm type, PS33 from 2009.

Accommodation
Passenger accommodation is longitudinal bench seating throughout. The trains use LED interior lighting.

Latest operation status
205-500 series are used on the rural services of Sagami Line and Yokohama line linking Chigasaki and Hachi-oji.
