Background and overview
Japanese National Railways (JNR) had continued to deliver 113 series and
115 series suburban DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains giving some
improvements continuously. JNR developed new technologies for next generation
of suburban trains, including light weight stainless body, bolsterless
bogies, and field added excitation traction control by the appearance of
201 series next generation commuter train and developed 3rd generation
of commuter DC electric multiple unit trains, 205 series. Next JNR developed
the next generation of suburban DC electric multiple unit trains, 211 series,
in 1985. 211 series consisting of 2 motored vehicles and 3 trailer vehicles
have same performance as 113/115 series consisting of 2 motored vehicles
and 2 trailer vehicles by featuring light weight stainless body, bolsterless
bogies, and field added excitation traction control.
Car body
They have 2950mm wide body, incorporating light weight stainless construction.
They have the double orange and green waistline and orange headline bands
running the length of each car below and above the windows. Cab ends are
covered with a Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) panel and electrolytic colouring
aluminum black plates are fitted above and below windscreens. 1st class
vehicles are equipped with two 700mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding
doors on each side of the vehicles. Some drop windows and the other fixed
windows are fitted between the doors. Standard class vehicles are equipped
with three 1300mm wide double-leaf automatic sliding doors. Drop windows
and door case windows are fitted between the doors. Door operating equipments
of 1st class is TK103 fitted above the door header of the sliding doors
and those of standard class are TK4J fitted under the seatings. Traditional
roller-binding destination screens are fitted on the body. The air conditioner
is AU71D rated at 28,000kcal/h for 1st class vehicles, and AU75G rated
at 42,000kcal for the others. Standard class vehicles have forced draft
ventilators fitted on the both side of the air conditioner. Couplers between
married pair motored cars feature drawbars and end cars are equipped with
the automatic jumper coupler to ease rush-up operations.
Bogies
Their bogies are DT50B/TR235B featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension,
corn-shaped multilayered rubber spring journal supporting system, and double
collar sealed roller bearing for improved stability at high speed. Traction
device of the bogie is multilayered rubber spring.
Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Series-wound brushed DC traction motors, MT61, with a power output of 120kW
realize larger torque at low speed and high speed by expanding the field
weakening ratio to 35%. The gear ratio is 5.19 to get high traction force
at starting and wide speed range of regeneration braking. Eight traction
motors of class moha211 and moha210 are controlled by the armature-resistance
traction control system, CS57A, featuring field added excitation control
and regenerative holding brake, which keep the travelling speed at the
holding brake operation starting. If the regenerative brake is not sufficient,
additional brake is provided by pneumatic friction brake. Class moha211
vehicles are equipped with a diamond-shaped current collector, PS21, on
their roof. Class moha210 vehicles are equipped with a motor driven air
compressor, MH3075A-C2000M, and a motor generator, DM106, with a power
output of 190kVA featuring brush less, for the auxiliary power supply.
The brake system is changed into the electric command pneumatic brake from
electromagnetic straight pneumatic brake, which was the standard of JNR
electric trains, and the brake response has been improved.
Accommodation
1st class cars have reclining seating, R54, with 970mm seating pitch. Standard
class cars have mixture of longitudinal bench seating and transverse bucket
seating bays with 1490mm seating pitch for comfort. The air conditioning
duct is fitted above the ceiling in order to improve interior design and
the outlets of cool air are slit shape. End trailer cars of Kuha211 and
Kuha210, and 1st class intermediate trailer cars of Saro211 are equipped
with a Japanese style toilet. 1st class intermediate trailer cars of Saro210
are equipped with a conductor's room.
Operations
JNR delivered four car formation 211-0 series to Nagoya region providing
additional capacity of rapid services, 1986. These train sets include motored
end cars, Kumoha211-0. End cars are not equipped with the automatic jumper
coupler. They have the double blue and white waistline and blue headline
bands running the length of each car below and above the windows.
After the splitting of the former JNR into the new privatized JR companies
in April 1987, JR East, and JR Central received 211 series vehicles.
Additiona delivery
Since JR East and JR Central do not continue to deliver 211 series having
mixture of longitudinal bench seating and transverse bucket seating bays,
additional 211-0 series of standard class had not been delivered. But JR
East developed bilevel trailer vehicles providing 1st class 1st class accommodation
and delivered Saro213 vehicles with a western toilet and a wash stand,
and Sato212 vehicles with a conductor room. Their body design incorporates
stainless steel in order to realize lightweight body, employing weld structure
bath-tab shaped underframe made of weather proof high-tension steel sheet
having 9mm thick. Air conditioners are AU713 rated at 18000kcal/h, fitted
on the roof at both end of the body. Their bogies are TR235G employing
anti-rolling stabilizer. Interior layout and accommodation are 2-2 abreast
reclining seatins with 970mm seating pitch. Class saro213 vehicles and
class saro210 vehicles are coupled and class sato212 and class saro211
vehicles are also coupled in order to insert a bilevel 1st class vehicle
to each formation.
Latest operation status
Although 211-0 series delivered to Tokyo metropolitan area had been used
on the ordinary services of Tokaido line, they were replaced with E233-3000
series. Now they were relocated to Nagano region. 211-0 series deliverd
to Nagoya region are now used on the ordinary services of Kansai line. |
