Background and overview
211 series EMU trains which replace superannuated 115 series used on the ordinary services of Tohoku line and Takasaki line are classified into -1000 subseries with mixture of transverse seating bays and longitudinal bench seating, and -2000 subseries with longitudinal seating throughout.

Car body and Accommodation
211-1000/3000 series are equipped with the semi-automatic doors. Passengers can open or close doors manually by pushing buttons. The snow ploughs are added at each end. The end motored cars were delivered in order to make short formations in the future. Only Kuha210 is equipped with a Japanese style toilet. No 1st class cars were delivered.

Operations
After splitting former JNR into new privatized JR companies, JR East continued to build only 211-3000 series. The bi-level trailer car of first-class is newly developed and inserted for each 10-car formation. 1st class cars were relocated from Tokaido line and classified into -1000 subseries with addition of the semi-automatic doors.
211-2000/3000 series had been used on the ordinary services of Tohoku line and Takasaki line. They were replaced with E231 series and E233 series. Now 211-2000/3000 series are used on the rural services of Boso region and Nagano region.
