JR East delivered E231-1000 series EMU in order to replace superannuated
115 series EMU used on the long-distance suburban services of the Tohoku
line and the Takasaki line from 2000. The end cars feature the impact absorbing
structure so their cab section is 490mm longer than that of E231-0 series.
The distance between the door behind the cab section and the next door
is shorter than the distance between the other doors. There are 10-car
formations and 5-car formations. The end cars except the Ueno side of 10-car
formation are equipped with the automatic jumper coupler. Bogies are DT61/TR246
that is same as that of E231-0 series.
Traction motors, MT73, rated at 95kW are same as
those of E231-0 series. The 2-level AVAF
(Adjustable Voltage Adjustable Frequency)
traction system, SC59A, controls 8 AC 3-phase
asynchronous motors.
Although the passenger accommodation of most
vehicles is longitudinal bench seating, 2 Ueno
side end cars of 10-car formations and 2
Utsunomiya side end cars of 5-car formations
feature a mixture of longitudinal bench seating
and transverse seating bays. The door engines
feature the liner motor drive. Passengers can
open or close doors manually by pushing buttons.
The both end cars of 10-car formations and a
Ueno side end car of 5-car formations are
equipped with the universal access toilets.
E231-1000 series EMU were also delivered in order to replace 113 series
EMU used on the long-distance suburban services of the Tokaido line from
2003. E231-1000 series for the Tōkaidō line differ from those
for the Tohoku and Takasaki lines in including two bilevel trailer cars
of having 1st class accommodation and additional two standard class cars
having a mixture of longitudinal bench seating and transverse seating bays.
Their traction system was changed into AVAF traction system, SC77. The
air conditioners were changed into more powerful AU726A, so the capacity
of the auxiliary power supply was also increased.
Passenger accommodation of the 1st class
features the rotatable reclining seating and the
car readers for paying 1st class fee are fitted
above the each seating. The analog indicators of
the drivers cab were changed into the liquid
crystal display.
Two bilevel trailer cars of 1st class were also introduced to E231-1000 series EMU used in the long-distance suburban services of the Tohoku and Takasaki lines, and surplus trailer cars were diverted to the formations for the Tokaido line.
Now E231-1000 series are used on the long-distance suburban services of
Tokaido line, Itoh line, Tohoku line, and Takasaki line. |
