Type index

209-950 series are the pre-production type of an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type used for next generation of commuter and suburban services. 209-950 series feature new technologies at a lower cost. Their formation consists of 4 motored vehicles and 6 trailer vehicles.
209-950 series have wider bodies (2950mm compared to the 2800mm for earlier commuter trains) in order to communalize the commuter trains and suburban trains. The vehicle design incorporates light stainless steel construction. 4 pairs of doors are located at each side of the body, excepting Saha208 has 6 pairs of doors. The 3-colour LED destination indicators are fitted.
209-950 series feature Train Information Management System (TIMS). TIMS applies RS485 interface and manage the traction control, in-train announcement apparatus, voice communication for train crews and passengers, air conditioner control, and so on. Commands of service braking are carried by TIMS. Braking on formation basis by TIMS realizes regeneration rate improvement.
Bogies design is based on those of 209 series, with the minor difference in preparing yaw damper, due to smooth ride characteristics at 120km/h.
Traction systems are AVAF inverter by IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor), adopting 2-step control or 3-step control. Improved traction motors, MT73, rated at 95 kw each give same acceleration performance as 209 series and a maximum service speed of 120km/h. The brake system is the electric command brake. Regenerative brake is available. The current collectors are single-arm type, PS33.
Passenger accommodation is cantilever type longitudinal bench seating throughout. Seating on the vehicles equipped with 6 doors can be folded. All Windows located between doors can be opened. E231 series adopt heat ray absorption windowpanes so blinds are discontinued. Door operating equipment is driven by the electricity. The air conditioner is AU726 rated at 50,000kcal/h for Saha208, and AU725 rated at 42,000kcal for the others.
209-950 series were delivered in 1998 and entered the commuter services of Chuo-Sobu line. It was reclassified as E231-900 series in June 2000, after E231-0 series EMU entered the services.
E231-900 series are now used on the commuter services of Chuo-Sobu line.
