In 2003, JR East developed E231-800 series DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains in order to replace superannuated 301 series EMU and 103-1200 series EMU used on Chuo-Sobu Line and Tokyo Metro Tozai Line interrunning services. 6 out of 10 cars are powered with AC traction motors rated at 95kW, giving high acceleration performance rated at 3.3 km/h/s.
The vehicle design incorporates stainless steel construction for light weight, featuring flat-sided narrow body, provided for converging with the underground railway. The floor height is lowered to 1,165 mm for improved accessibility, compared to 1,200 mm for 209-1000 series trains. End cars are equipped with an emergency door in front of them. They feature DT61G/TR246T/TR246S bogies, adopting the bolster-less air suspension and axle arm type journal box supporting system, and preparing anti-yaw dampers for improved stability. The traction device of the bogies was changed into single link. As for the device of driving cab, one handle master controller operated by the left hand was adopted. ATC device is fitted under the floor of the end cars.
8 asynchronous motors, MT73, rated at 95kW are controlled by 3-level AVAF inverter traction system, SC60C, on 2 cars collective, employing fields-oriented control. E231-800 features the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake. Commands of service braking are carried by TIMS. Braking on formation basis by TIMS realizes regeneration rate improvement. Current collectors are single-arm type.
Passenger accommodation is cantilever type longitudinal seating. All Windows located between doors can be opened. E231-800 series adopt heat ray absorption windowpanes so blinds are discontinued. The spaces for the wheelchair are located in cars No. 2 and 8. Door operating equipment is driven by the electricity. The air conditioner is AU726A rated at 50,000kcal/h.
70 vehicles were built and are now used on Chuo-Sobu Line and Tokyo Metro Tozai Line interrunning services.
