Type index

In 1996, the pre-production vehicle of EF210 pulling 1300t freight trains was developed by JR Freight in order to replace superannuated EF65 engines. Compared with the high-cost and high-performance EF200, EF210-901 was designed to give the suitable performance against the ground facilities at a lower cost than EF200 engines.
AC 3-phase asynchronous motors are driven by AVAF traction systems constituted by GTO thyristor. Compared with the EF200 controlled by axle basis, 2 motors are controlled by a traction system together in order to reduce the traction systems. Traction systems include reactors and disconnecting switches. Maximum service speed is 110km/h. Although one-hour rating is 3390kW, 30-mintue rating is 3540kW for operation on graded mountain route around Sekigahara, Gifu Pref. current collectors are PS22 cross-arm type pantograph, same as that of former JNR locomotives, in order to keep the compatibility with former locomotives.
The brake system is the electric command brake with rheostatic brake. Brake output is 2720kW. Bogies are bolster-less type with air spring and the journal box supporting system adopts axle arm type. EF210-901 adopts nose suspended drive.
